Riding to Cure type 1 diabetes

In February JDRF's One Ride is returning to the Barossa Valley to raise awareness and money for research for type 1 diabetes.

Before Covid, I was a regular participant in this event, and with your support raised thousands of dollars towards diabetes research. I was even honored with a JDRF Cycling Foundation Life Membership, promising to keep riding until a cure is found.  Making the distance was a challenge, but was never in doubt for someone who spends a lot of time on their bike. In 2019 I entered the 24 hour version of the event  in a Solo team, at The Bend. 610kms and no big toenails later, I said "never again".  Thankfully that's now a distant memory.

This next event will present a personal challenge for me. In April I suffered a severe spinal injury falling from my roof after a bike ride. At the time I honestly thought I would not be able to get back on my bike again, let alone walk. With the support and encouragement of my Rehab team, family and friends, I am back riding. Riding  the 160km distance on the 17th of February at this point in time seems like an awfully big challenge but it is the goal I have set myself ....

This challenge however pales in comparison to the daily challenges people living with type 1 diabetes face. I am reminded of this regularly in my clinics. I have developed relationships dating back 20 years with people living with diabetes, watching them bravely face the challenges that diabetes has served up to them.

Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any time.  8 Australians are diagnosed each day. Diagnosis means a lifetime of daily treatment and decision making to remain safe and healthy. JDRF is the largest funder of type 1 diabetes research in the world.

DONATE NOW to help change the lives of more than 130,000 Australians living with T1D. Thank you!

Thursday 8th Feb
A little over a week until the big event.
Extended forecast says 33 degrees which I'd be happy with as we get away fairly early in the morning which would make for good riding conditions.
We've reached our team fundraising target.
I'm still very sore and Dean is recovering from recent Covid. It should be interesting....
We ride past Williamstown pub twice. Not a bad spot for a stop to hydrate if needed :-) We've tested it out before...
